This is perhaps the greatest discovery I've made in a long time: while reading the handy little booklet provided in the Near Dark DVD set, I ran across an interesting tidbit about a certain music video for actor Bill Paxton's short-lived 80s musical project "Martini Ranch" that was directed by James Cameron (Avatar, Titanic, Terminator 2, Aliens). Yes, I just said BILL PAXTON sang in a band in the 80s. The song was "Reach" and the video also starred film director Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, Strange Days, Point Break, Near Dark) and fellow actors Lance Henrikson, Judge Reinhold, Paul Reiser, Mark Rolston, Jenette Goldstein, and Brian Thompson. Not only that but their one and only album "Holy Cow" also had help from several members of Devo and Cindy Wilson from the B-52's. And that amazing whistling you hear in the song? That is attributed to Judge Reinhold in the album's credits. Who knew the guy was so dang talented?
After watching that video you might be wondering how could it possibly get any better than this? Well, it's quite simple really: their other music video for "How Can the Labouring Man Have Time for Self-Culture?" featuring Anthony Michael Hall, Michael Biehn, Rick Rossovich, Judge Reinhold (again!), and someone who looks suspiciously like Jeff Goldblum...
Well at this point you're probably wondering where you can get your own copy of this amazing piece of musical genius. Truth is, it can be found quite reasonably on ebay or Amazon, but I thought I'd provide a link to satisfy your curiosity in the meantime. If you like what you hear - go buy it!
